DAM Productions: Shuck

24 12 2009

DAM Productions brings us another full cast audio drama written by James D Quinton. The Doctor and his companions arrives in 16th Century England where they encounter the legend of a mysterious dark beast known as the Black Shuck. It certainly evokes all the qualities of a classic chiller to curl up in front of the fireplace with. Enjoy it either streamed or downloaded.

Cat Flap Audios

20 12 2009

Another audio group has recently arrived on the scene. This time it is a small group of youngsters making both audio drama and audiobook stories. It’s early days for aspiring Cat Flap, not least because most of the group are about 12 or 13 years old, so don’t expect the polish of older teams. Actors are doing lots of multiple roles, and it could do with some more music and sound effects. However, what they lack in experience is given a boost from enthusiasm. It’s also very encouraging to see audio drama reaching out to a new audience.

There are over half a dozen stories up on their youtube channel. Put ‘audio’ or ‘audiobook’ in the search box and everything should come up. I’ll be putting the story titles into the database shortly.

It also includes an open call to Doctor Who audio script writers for their story proposals. A chance to get involved with a well produced and established series no less. Details of what to send and where are in the video.

Darker Projects: The Dreamers (part 2)

30 11 2009

After years of living as a human with Emma, The Doctor is trying to get back to his old self. Whilst Emma is confused and upset at the loss of Jason (The Doctor’s former guise), now he is no longer the man she knew and loved. Chameleon Arch stories have certainly become more en vogue after Human Nature aired, and I’ll be honest that I didn’t particularly care for Darker Projects’ previous story which followed Jasons change into The Doctor. However, the end result has been good. The series now has one of the most interesting Doctor companion dynamics, and it’s hard to tell how it will develop.

Also, the story itself has a lovely eerie quality, making good use of the imagery of Londons landmarks in distress – the Tate Modern, the tube. Along with the use of these mysterious horses. I’ve said previously that both the leads play their parts well, nothing’s changed there. It’s a solid production all round.

The WhoCast on Fan Audios

9 11 2009

For anyone who doesn’t subscribe to the DWO WhoCast podcast, their latest episode was all about fan audio dramas. They take a look at DAM Productions, DWAD, BTR Productions, and Crossover Adventures, giving an overview and balanced opinions on various stories. In fact, on the whole they are very favourable comments. So it could be of use to any of you thinking about listening to one of these audio groups. It’s a shame they didn’t cover some of the more recently started companies, but with so much choice maybe that will pave the way for a future show. They do ask for feedback and suggestions, so you can petition them at will. You may also have to protect your ears from the cheeky K-9 bashing at the start. I’m still waving my K-9 flag.
